The Jung Society of Utah and Ecstatic Dance are pleased to bring a night of poetry that will surely move your body, mind and soul. The Mess of Being Human will start with Rhode Island Poet Laureate Emerita Lisa Starr, who will bring her award-winning collection of poetry and storytelling which will speak to the nuances of being human as well as its glory which can be messy at times. The second part of the night will be a slam poetry competition. Our website will share more details on prizes and the overall competition. The evening will end with a sound bath ceremony which will help integrate the poetry into each guest’s body. Sound baths are a great relaxation technique where participants “bathe” in the soundwaves produced by singing bowls, chimes and drums.

LISA STARR

Lisa Starr is the author of three collections of poetry, including Mad With Yellow, her most recent. She also co-edited the anthology Where Beach Meets Ocean, celebrating the Block Island Poetry Project, the writing series she founded and directed for 13 years at The Hygeia House. Currently she is completing Pot Luck, a collection of poems about children, and collaborating with her long-time companion, the poet and Rumi translator Coleman Barks, on a memoir about grief, time, and their friendship with Mary Oliver.

The newly appointed Artistic Director for the Arts Café Mystic, Starr also runs a monthly poetry salon at The Savoy Bookstore and Café in Westerly, R.I.
